A career with longevity: three RNs share why they’ve worked at Providence in Oregon for a decade or more
A nurse’s tenure at a healthcare organization speaks volumes about the working environment, which is why we’re proud when nurses choose to work with us for a decade—or two or three! Here’s what three nurses in Oregon have to say about why they’ve stayed.
Peggy: three decades at Providence Medford Medical Center

“I have been here almost from the beginning of my career,” says Peggy, an ICU RN who’s worked with us in Medford for 33 years. One of the biggest reasons she’s stayed all this time: the benefits. One benefit she’s particularly grateful for is tuition reimbursement. “Providence was so generous in providing a way for me to complete my BSN,” she says. “They provided the opportunity and supported me through the process.”
Peggy also appreciates the health insurance for herself and her children, the ample paid time away and 401(k) savings that will support her as she approaches retirement. In addition, she’s felt supported in caring for her aging parents. “I have had family issues with elderly parents and have been so grateful for family leave. There has been much to be grateful for.”

Monica: two decades at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital

“There is always something new to learn,” says Monica, an RN who’s worked with us for more than two decades in Hood River. Despite her long tenure, she continues to appreciate the dynamic nature of her job, saying, “whether it’s comforting a family member or brainstorming with a coworker, I enjoy the challenges and rewards.”
She appreciates that her leaders and teammates have her back. “We collaborate well,” she says. “We huddle daily to make sure things are going well and offer help to each other if needed.” That support extended to when she was working to obtain her bachelor’s degree. “I achieved my BSN and was supported by my peers while doing so.”
Monica is also thankful for the coworkers she’s had by her side for years and the mental health and other benefits available to support her and her family. “The wellness resources have helped me when I’ve needed it.”
