Four ways nurses flourish at Providence
At Providence, we know that to attract, inspire and retain the best nurses, we must support them in every way we can. For the 40,000+ phenomenal nurses across the Providence family of organizations, we remain focused on four priorities: giving our nurses a voice in decisions that affect their practice, fostering a culture of belonging, offering competitive compensation and best-in-class benefits, and ensuring they feel safe in the workplace.
- Our nurses have a voice and opportunities to grow.
Providence Nursing Institute ensures that regardless of role or position, each nurse has access to professional development support and options for career growth—and our professional governance structure fosters a collaborative environment for shared decision-making which allows nurses to have a voice in decisions that affect their practice.
Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Syl Trepanier eloquently sums up what nursing looks like at Providence. “As I think about our future, I consider the importance of civility, of life-long learning, the prerogative of independent nursing practice and self-governance, and supporting nurses who transition into practice or specialty. Together, we will reinforce these tenets. Together, we will define what it means to be a Providence nurse. Together, we will ensure Health for a Better World.”
- We cultivate a culture of belonging.
Nursing can be hard—so it’s vital to feel connected to your teams, leaders, patients and your purpose. From day one, we seek to instill in every Providence caregiver (employee) a sense that they belong. We care for each other just as we do for our patients. We strive to create fulfilling work environments that make every nurse feel valued, heard and included.
ED RN Hannah says, “As a new grad, anytime we would meet a new person, my preceptor would stop and say, ‘Hey, this is Hannah. She’s new to our department.’ And she literally did that for everybody that we met during my preceptorship. That left a lasting impression on me because by the first week, I knew everybody’s name. I knew who I could ask for help. People knew who I was. That culture of belonging, I passed it along to the next person I precepted and then the person after that.”
- We offer competitive pay and best-in-class benefits.
Providence offers competitive pay for nurses in every state we serve, and in many cases, our nurses are paid above the national average. For example, in Alaska, Washington and California, according to Indeed data, our average hourly rates for Registered Nurses (RNs) are 14%, 22% and 37% above the national average, respectively.
Beyond direct compensation (hourly salary, differential pay, call pay, etc.), our comprehensive total rewards package also includes retirement, health and insurance benefits, paid leave, tuition reimbursement, well-being resources and perks such as employee discounts.
CNO Katie, who joined the organization as a student nurse and worked her way up the ranks over her 18-year career, says, “I did my entire master’s degree program through Providence with tuition reimbursement and a scholarship that was available to me. I think I paid a couple hundred dollars out of pocket.”
- We prioritize a safe practice environment.
Protecting our caregivers’ physical, mental and emotional wellbeing is our utmost priority. We have systems for de-escalation and violence prevention, communication about patients who pose a risk for violence, and emergency response support, including emergency response teams to provide assistance if a patient or visitor is displaying aggressive behavior. The “Speak Up for Safety” icon on computer desktops makes it easy for caregivers to report incidents, and several of our locations feature K9 security teams to deter violence.
We also support our caregivers’ emotional well-being. Onsite counselors are available at some Providence locations and virtual counselors are available to all caregivers in partnership with Optum and Lyra. Counselors can provide one-on-one support and coaching for a variety of issues. Chaplains are also available as a resource to caregivers of all faiths and spiritual practices, as well as their families, in person or via TeleSpiritual Health. Finally, caregivers also have quick access to licensed therapists and mental health coaches through the Choose Well benefit. No matter what you’re going through, you don’t have to face it alone.
