How a hospital stay inspired one Providence caregiver’s career journey

August 7, 2025

Sometimes, life’s bumps in the road can direct us toward new opportunities. For Clinical Care Coordinator Trisha, her first experience with Providence was as a patient. She says the exceptional care she received during that tough time sparked a profound shift—not just in her health, but in her career and sense of purpose.

A life-changing experience at Providence

After a severe fall left Trisha with a broken hip, she was rushed to Providence Medford Medical Center, where she spent nearly a week recovering. “The care I received was incredible,” she recalls. “Every single person—from the nurses to the CNAs to the people who came to transport me—was amazing.” Rather than feeling overwhelmed by the stress that can come with a hospital stay, Trisha found an atmosphere of calm and compassion. The attention to her physical and emotional well-being remained consistent through every shift change.

“That’s what stood out to me most,” she says. “Even after six days, every single person took such good care of me. There was no drop-off in attention or kindness.” It was during her recovery that Trisha had an epiphany. She decided that she didn’t just want to heal and move on—she wanted to be part of the Providence team and provide the same compassionate care to others.

A new beginning in the healthcare industry

At the time, Trisha was managing a restaurant with her family. However, her stay in the hospital shifted her priorities. She says, “I was tired of running the restaurant, and that injury, as tough as it was, made me realize I wanted to give others the same care I experienced.”

Trisha enrolled in a medical assistant program and worked hard to complete her education. When she graduated, Providence was the first place she applied. “It was the only place I wanted to work,” she says with a laugh. “And when I got hired, I was ecstatic!”

Outgrowing her role as a medical assistant

Over the years, Trisha’s leapt at every opportunity to progress in her career, stressing that Providence offers an environment where growth and education are not only encouraged but actively supported.

“They have a step program for medical assistants, where you can move up to an MA2, MA3 or lead MA,” she explains. “They also offer courses, certifications and constant opportunities for learning.”

She recalls how the hands-on training she received helped her gain confidence in her new role, even when the challenges initially felt overwhelming. “When I first started, I was so nervous. I wasn’t familiar with any of the computer systems, and I felt like I couldn’t keep up,” she admits. “But the patience and support from my coworkers and leadership got me through it.”

Now in her role as a clinical care coordinator, she says there’s no cap to how far she can grow. “There’s always something new to learn,” she says. “Providence really makes it possible for you to grow your career in ways you might not have thought were possible.”

Building connections with patients

Trisha loves working at her clinic, in large part because of the connections she’s able to form with patients. “It’s different from a hospital or urgent care setting,” she explains. “You see patients all the time, and it’s fulfilling to build those bonds and follow their progress. When a patient introduces me to their loved one and says, ‘This is Trish, the person I told you about,’ it’s such a special moment.”

She helps patients stay on top of preventive care like mammograms and colonoscopies, manages follow-up after hospital visits, and makes sure no detail falls through the cracks. Even on the busiest days, Trisha finds joy in her work because she knows it makes a difference. “A perfect day isn’t about clearing out my entire desktop—it’s when the patients leave with smiles on their faces. That’s what it’s all about.”

Through it all, Trisha says she never forgets what it felt like to be a patient herself. “I know what it’s like to be scared, injured and not know what to expect. That’s why I do my best to put my patients at ease.”

A workplace community with heart

Trisha gushes about her coworkers at the clinic and calls them her “second family.”

“There’s no hierarchy where someone’s treated like they’re better than someone else,” she explains. “Everybody helps each other, from the doctors to the medical assistants. That’s what makes our clinic feel like home.”

Leadership also plays a big role in maintaining this supportive culture. Trisha notes that her managers are approachable and understanding, always ready to address concerns or accommodate personal needs. “Our leadership believes in work-life balance, and that makes such a big difference,” she says.

“Providence is a place where you feel wanted, needed and cared for,” Trisha says. “It’s not just about the patients—they care about their employees too. That’s a rare thing to find.”
