Inspired to serve: One RN’s journey at Covenant Health

July 2, 2025

From her first day at Covenant Health, part of the Providence family of organizations, Registered Nurse Veronica said she felt like she was in the right place. “I truly feel that God put me where He needs me to be,” she shares. Veronica’s journey into healthcare was shaped by her faith and a deep desire to serve others—read on to discover why she feels Covenant Hobbs Hospital in New Mexico is the perfect place for her to work.

A workplace rooted in a Mission to serve

Many caregivers are drawn to Covenant because we live by our Mission, which Veronica says she sees in action every day. To Veronica, every interaction, whether with a patient, colleague or community member, should be grounded in compassion, dignity and a sense of sacred purpose. It’s how she lives her life both on and off the clock. “If you are looking to be a blessing to others, to have a Mission, to have a drive, to serve God’s children, this is a place where you absolutely want to be,” Veronica says.

Veronica says she and her fellow caregivers know that they’re stronger together. “We all need each other,” she shares. “It’s not just up to one person. It’s all of us put together.” She says that she and her teammates show they care for each other by supporting each other through hard times, remembering birthdays and generally connecting on a personal level. “You don’t just have the relationship at work. You can have the personal relationship, too.”

Veronica says that her teammates joke that she’s the “tour person” when new hires join the hospital, because she always takes them throughout the entire hospital instead of just the area where they’ll be working so they can feel fully welcomed. “I feel like they need to know every area,” Veronica says. “They may not remember every area of the hospital, but if they at least have a sense of where it’s at and who’s there and the familiar faces, it will help them feel more welcome.”

Managers that serve with heart

Veronica emphasizes that her manager is the glue that bonds the team. “Our manager is here, supporting each and every one of us.”

Health care can be challenging, and Veronica says her manager handles challenges with grace. “If a situation arises, she listens and she acts. She cares about us. She cares about our mental health. She cares about it all. She’s an amazing person.”

A life of service inside and outside the hospital

Covenant’s service extends beyond the walls of its ministries. This includes caregiver involvement and organizational community benefit programs. As a team, Veronica says, “We really do a lot for the community. For example, we build ramps for people with disabilities. We care about our hometown and we care about our people.”

Last year, Covenant invested $81 million in community benefit programs. A key initiative was a partnership with the Palmer Drug Abuse Program in Lea County, New Mexico, providing matching grant funds to support people and families affected by substance use disorders with free, life-changing services. Other initiatives include mobile clinics, expansion of our free Diabetes and Prediabetes Program, outreach to the unhoused and investments in housing, behavioral health and supporting uninsured or underinsured people in our region.

Growing in faith and in career

In an environment grounded in purpose, Veronica sees endless room to grow. “There’s always opportunity for growth in all the areas of the hospital,” she says. Whether learning new skills or mentoring others, she sees every opportunity as a way to continue her service and deepen her impact.

Nurses can grow at Covenant in a variety of ways. New nurses can jumpstart their career by participating in our New Graduate RN Program, which provides RNs with everything they need to transition from school to the hospital floor. Residents become part of a health care team based on non-hierarchal relationships and collegiality.

Experienced nurses can grow in their current role or take on a new position with the help of best-in-class benefits, including:

  • Online tuition/education process and aligned policy for benefits-eligible caregivers with a network of more than 220 schools offering discounted tuition rates. Plus, individual educational counseling with education and finance experts to help you make the right decisions to achieve your educational goals.
  • A variety of online and in-person opportunities for caregivers and their dependents to receive an education conveniently and affordably through our partnership with the University of Providence (UP). Caregivers who use their benefit at UP can participate in immediate tuition reimbursement , providing funds earlier to pay for schooling at the beginning of the term. Check out which programs fit your educational needs.
  • Additional resources like our learning platform with a virtual career coach to help you assess your skills and interests, explore career options and develop a path toward achieving your ideal job.

Join our Mission-driven culture of caring

Veronica describes Covenant as “the happiest place I’ve ever worked.” Why? She says it’s simple. “I feel that way because of the way I have been treated, how I’ve been heard and the team that I have.”
