Three reasons to work (and live) in Eureka, California

April 16, 2025

If you’re looking for a meaningful job in healthcare and a lifestyle that feeds your soul, Eureka might be just the place. At Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, California, caregivers (employees) find a place where their work matters—and so do they. Whether you’re an experienced professional or a new grad, here’s why joining our team (and this beautiful community) could be the best decision you’ll ever make.

1. You’ll grow here—professionally and personally

When we say there’s room to grow at Providence, we mean it. Ask around, and you’ll find inspiring stories like Marcus’s. He started on the Lift Team more than 15 years ago, worked his way up as a nurse’s aide, and is now a licensed respiratory therapist. He credits his path to the support he received from leadership and his team: “Providence was there to see me through all my growth,” he says. “It was great having the support of management.”

Maureen, one of our newest cardiovascular sonographers, moved to Eureka from L.A. after finishing her degree. “As a new grad, I wanted to be somewhere supportive,” she says. “Providence is a place where people care about you and how you are going to be the best person that you can be.”

Our hospital offers real opportunities to build your skills and advance your career—whether that means pursuing leadership roles, cross-training in other departments or taking advantage of tuition reimbursement. You bring the curiosity and drive. We’ll bring the support.

2. You’ll be part of a tight-knit team

At Providence Eureka, you won’t just find coworkers—you’ll find a community.

Radiology supervisor, Stephen, says it best: “The best part of my job is the people I work with. We laugh, we joke and we help each other when it matters most.” That sense of camaraderie is something you’ll feel across departments. Whether it’s covering shifts, or hosting baby showers for team members, we have a culture of looking out for one another.

Lancey, a clinical coordinator who’s worked here for over two decades, says her team feels like a family. “There’s a rhythm to how we work together,” she says. “Everyone knows their role, and there’s a lot of communication that happens between the entire team.” And when there’s a particularly hard case, the team makes space for debriefs or productive discussions that are especially welcome.

Even new team members feel it right away. Maureen shares, “I’ve been here a month, and every day I give thanks for where I am, because it’s not all the time that you are put in an environment where you can truly flourish.”

3. You get to live in a Northern California paradise

Tucked between ancient redwoods and the rugged Pacific coastline, Eureka gives you access to natural beauty in every direction. Want to hike through towering forests, bike along scenic trails, kayak through calm bays, or stroll on uncrowded beaches? It’s all within minutes of the hospital.

Lancey, a lifelong Humboldt County resident, puts it this way: “If you’re a nature lover, you can be in the redwoods or at the beach. If you love to get out and bike or hike or boat, all of those things are right at our fingertips.” Even Sequoia Park, with its forest trails, skywalk, and zoo, is just a five-minute walk from the hospital—perfect for a lunchtime escape.

But it’s not just the landscape that makes this place special—it’s the people. Our caregivers describe Eureka as a community that’s easy to settle into. You’ll find Friday night farmers’ markets, quirky local events like the Kinetic Sculpture Race, and charming cafes and shops. There’s a creative spirit here—as evidenced by the many murals around town—a slower pace, and a sense of connection that’s hard to find in bigger cities.

Richard, who moved here after working in major medical centers across the country as a traveler, says he’s found a deeper sense of purpose in this rural setting. “I feel more respected, more valued as a person here,” he says. “I can still grow but also be in a small community.”
