4 reasons to build your career as a maternal health or pediatric RN at Providence

September 25, 2025

Caring for moms, babies or children provides nurses a unique opportunity to become a trusted advocate and educator at some of the most important moments in life. We’re hiring RNs across maternal and pediatric care, including Labor and Delivery (L&D), Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care (PICU), Pediatric Float Pool, Antepartum, Postpartum, Lactation, and Mother Baby/Obstetrics. Here are four reasons Providence is the perfect place to begin or grow your career in these specialties.

  1. You’ll have ownership of your practice and every interaction.

While that new mom will become a Mighty Mamasaurus Rex and that fragile NICU preemie will slay dragons someday, today, they look to you to lead the charge—and at Providence, we passionately encourage nurses to own not only patient interactions but their nursing practice overall. That means championing every nurse’s personalized approach to care, encouraging true connections, and fostering a culture where RNs are empowered to confidently voice concerns or ideas for improvement, which fuels not only excellent patient outcomes but also breeds a positive work environment.

Pat Patton, Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at Providence Swedish in Washington, says, “It’s the nurses, the people who are the closest to the work, that are figuring it out. I want all nurses to be able to say, ‘I have ownership of my practice and what I do every day. I can bring issues forward that can be fixed. I don’t have to be frustrated when I come to work because I have a voice and feel that I can speak up and find solutions.’”

Across our seven-state system, CNOs like Pat work hard to ensure nurses have the tools, resources and encouragement they need to deliver the best care. As Pat says, “Positive, nurse-driven changes mean better patient care experiences and a happier place to work.”

  1. You’ll find mom-umental opportunities for growth.

Advancing your skills and growing professionally are essential for a long and satisfying nursing career. Whether you’re a new graduate or an experienced RN looking for a new challenge, we’re committed to your growth from day one, providing clear pathways for you to achieve your career goals.

  • Transitioning to maternal care: Experienced nurses interested in transitioning to a maternal health specialty can do so as an RN Fellow. Paulie, who works with us in Oregon, began her career as a medical oncology RN before switching to her dream role in L&D.
  • Starting out strong: For new graduates, our Transition into Practice (TIP) program provides both RN Residents and Fellows the education and mentorship needed for a smooth start. NICU RN Kendall, who works with us in Southern California, started her nursing journey this way—then used it to specialize. “I got the resources, education, and mentorship I needed to smoothly transition into my new role as a nurse,” she says. When she decided to transition to the NICU, she says she got “everything I needed in order to be successful.”

Nurses interested in leadership are encouraged along the way by teams, managers and leaders, as well. Katie, a CNO in California, talks about her own journey to leadership. “I started as a bedside nurse in an intensive care unit and developed and grew into the role of preceptor and then charge nurse. And when I started my leadership journey, I started as an assistant nurse manager in that same intensive care unit. And with time and support, I was promoted to a director role and then senior director, executive director, and now CNO. And with each step, with each new opportunity, there was a leader above me and leaders alongside me saying, ‘You can do this, you’ve got this.’”

  1. You’ll get unparalleled team support as part of our #momandbabysquad

Nursing is a team sport, and that’s evident in the dynamic environment of maternal health. The quality of your team directly impacts your job satisfaction and your ability to provide the best possible care. A supportive team means having colleagues you can rely on, learn from, and celebrate successes with.

We pride ourselves on fostering a culture of collaboration and trust. Our nurses consistently highlight the strength of their teams as a key reason they love working here. Paulie says, “I am so lucky to work with the team that I do. I trust my team completely. They teach me things daily and are always incredibly supportive.”

Similarly, Kendall, a NICU RN in Southern California, emphasizes this collaborative spirit. “I never feel like I am alone, and I always have someone I can ask a question or ask for help. We truly give team-based care to our patients, and I know I can always count on my coworkers to help fill any need that comes our way unexpectedly.” This level of support ensures you can face any challenge with confidence since your squad will always have your back.

  1. You’ll receive a total rewards package worthy of your amazing contribution to our organization.

We know nurses give their all every day—so we make sure you’re cared for, too. As you focus on the beautiful business of bringing new humans into the world, we support you with a comprehensive suite of benefits worthy of the contribution you make to the community. Those include:

  • Outstanding medical, dental and vision coverage
  • Wellness and mental health supports with 25 free coaching, counseling or therapy sessions per year
  • Retirement benefits including Student Debt Match
  • Discounts on everything from sporting events to movie tickets
  • Annual tuition reimbursement to help with continuing and additional education.

Kendall appreciates the extras, saying, “When I decided to go back to school to get my bachelor’s in nursing, I was able to do so through the University of Providence and got my entire tuition covered by using the tuition reimbursement benefit. Knowing I can expand my education without worrying about the cost that comes with it gives me peace of mind.”

Amelia, a Children’s ED RN in Oregon, values the full scope of support. “I like that Providence provides reimbursement for education and certifications. I have also used discounts on vacations and hotels!”

Every day, our caregivers give their all to improve the health of our communities—and we’re proud to support them with benefits that help them stay mentally, physically, financially and spiritually fit.
