Accelerate your diagnostic imaging career in California

June 18, 2025

Whether your chosen modality is X-ray, ultrasound, mammography, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, echo or fluoroscopy, imagine a vibrant career in medical imaging with Providence. Our radiology technologists are provided with numerous opportunities to advance while they’re working in imaging, so they don’t have to press “pause” on their career trajectories while cross-training on something new. Along the way, caregivers are supported by leadership that prioritizes their best interests and nurtures a collaborative team culture where they can thrive. Read on to discover why three members of the radiology team at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, California, have chosen to work with us—and stayed for decades.

A job in radiology can grow into a fulfilling career

We take pride in helping our radiologic technologists achieve their individual career goals. For some, this means entering the workforce in X-ray, then choosing to specialize or pursue leadership. That was the case for Imaging Manager Brian, whose tenure at Holy Cross has spanned two decades.

“I started as a radiology technologist, then transitioned to CT,” shares Brian. “I worked up to become a lead in CT, moved to imaging supervisor, and now I’m the imaging manager.” Brian says that the organization supports upward movement within your specialty and offers cross-training opportunities for those who want to learn new modalities. “We are one of the only facilities I know of in the area that will cross-train technologists from one modality to another without them seeking education from a university.” This means that caregivers can develop skills in areas like CT, MRI or nuclear medicine while they are working in X-ray, opening up new career paths within medical imaging and sometimes an increase in salary, without disrupting their career trajectory.

Radiologic Technologist David says he’s worked with teammates who’ve moved on to be clinical instructors, specialize in nuclear medicine or focus on surgeries. “There was a gentleman who started in environmental services and Providence helped him go to school. Now he’s a cath lab technologist.”

David appreciates that Providence offers cutting-edge imaging technology from industry leaders like GE, Fujifilm and Kodak, enabling him to perform his best work and stay ahead in his field.

Servant leaders truly care about imaging techs

Supportive and accessible leadership is at the heart of Providence’s work culture. Here, imaging techs work with managers, supervisors and leads who mentor and empower them so they can do their best work. Diagnostic Imaging Supervisor Brandon says, “They actually don’t call us ‘supervisors’; they call us ‘servant leaders.’” He emphasizes leadership here isn’t just a title, it means working alongside teams, lifting others up and recognizing growth potential.

In Brandon’s case, his manager encouraged him to go back to school to pursue his bachelor’s degree, which enabled him to advance into his supervisory role. He took advantage of the Providence tuition reimbursement benefit available to eligible caregivers (employees).

Techs interested in leadership also receive on-the-job mentorship. Brian says that as he worked his way up the ranks, his leaders continuously provided the tools necessary for him to become a great leader himself.

Brandon echoes this sentiment, saying, “This is a place for opportunity and growth, and I cannot stress that enough. The leadership team really takes you under their wing and grows with you.”

A team culture of connection and care

One word seems to sum up our team culture best: connection. David, who’s worked with us for nearly 20 years, says, “When you find the right place to work, you wake up and you’re ready to go.” For him, Providence is that “right place,” largely due to the relationships he’s established working here. “I have a family at home and a family at work.”

He points out that the tight-knit feeling isn’t limited to his immediate team; the camaraderie stretches across departments hospital-wide, with everyone working toward the common goal of delivering excellent patient care while caring for one another as well.

David appreciates that leadership goes the extra mile to make employees feel connected. From huddles where they invite feedback to mentorship to simply taking a moment to enjoy each other as people, David values his leaders and teammates and feels valued in return.
