Get your start in health care as a Providence Environmental Services Technician
Are you searching for a rewarding career path that makes a difference in people’s lives daily? Whether you’re just starting or considering a career change, becoming a Providence Environmental Services Technician (EVS) could be the perfect opportunity.
EVS caregivers, also called housekeepers, are essential in maintaining safe and welcoming care environments for patients and staff. It’s more than cleaning — it’s about creating an atmosphere where healing happens. Here’s how Tony, an EVS Technician in Montana finds purpose and fulfillment in his work.
Five reasons to become an EVS caregiver at Providence
- Welcoming work environment
When he was a surfer in Huntington Beach, California, Tony had a tight-knit community—so he was thrilled to discover a similarly inviting environment when he joined Providence St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, Montana, as an EVS technician ten years ago. “I felt one hundred percent welcome when I started working here, and still do to this day.” Tony says he’s made lifelong friends at work. He even recently went on a cruise with coworkers.
- Keeps you active
Tony’s a lifelong extreme sports enthusiast, and he loves that his role as an EVS technician keeps him active. He began tracking his steps when he first started working at St. Patrick. “I did the math of how far I walk,” he says. “I know I walk about the length of the United States every year, and in my first eight and a half years, I walked around the world. Now, I’m on my second lap. I kind of feel like Forrest Gump.”
- Excellent benefits that can help cover major expenses
Providence caregivers receive comprehensive benefits from day one, including generous paid time off, flexible schedules, and medical, dental, and vision coverage. “It’s like I’m in Norway or something,” Tony jokes about the perks. He says he’s accumulated six weeks of paid time away and that the approximately $700 health incentive he receives per year in his health savings account completely paid for significant orthodontia.
- Opportunities to grow
Working as an EVS technician is rewarding, and it can also be the beginning of a long-term career at Providence. Employees are encouraged to advance. Tony says he’s seen an “unbelievable” number of people advance into nursing or leadership roles after starting as a housekeeper, medical assistant or CNA. Though Tony knows his manager would support him if he wanted to pursue a different path within the hospital or organization, he’s content where he is.
- Personal fulfillment
During his previous career as a limo driver, Tony couldn’t interact with his customers, let alone connect with them. He says at Providence, “I love that I’m able to connect and show empathy.” Making a tangible difference in patients’ lives is so fulfilling for Tony that he’s not in any hurry to retire. “I could retire now if I wanted to,” he shares, “but I’m not even close to interested. I just really like working here.”
