Looking for purposeful work? Find it at Providence

January 26, 2026

We hear time and again that caregivers choose to work at Providence because we’re a Mission-driven organization, offering a culture that reflects their values and a chance to make a real difference. Here’s why purpose is important at work and how we help caregivers find and cultivate it throughout their careers.

Looking for a purposeful role yourself? Check out our openings.

Why purpose matters in the workplace

Recent Gallup research shows that workers with a strong sense of purpose at work are 5.6 times more likely to be engaged in their jobs than those with a low sense of purpose. They also experience significantly lower rates of burnout and are less likely to feel the need to switch jobs in search of more meaningful work.

Fulfillment at work shouldn’t be an afterthought. When you’re more engaged, you’re more resilient. You’re better equipped to handle challenging situations. Purpose not only gives meaning to daily tasks but also fosters belonging and supportive teams because everyone is working toward a shared goal.

Six ways we help caregivers find purpose at Providence

There’s no one-size-fits-all formula for finding purposeful work. Here are some of the ways we help caregivers cultivate meaningful careers at Providence:

  1. We consider every employee a caregiver.
No matter your role, whether you work directly with patients or behind the scenes, your work supports care for our patients, our communities and each other. We’re all caregivers, and we’re all in it together.
  1. We normalize helping each other.
We create a supportive environment where caregivers assist each other, both professionally and personally. As Stephen, a Surgical Support Technician in Torrance, notes, “It’s like a family—we just help each other.” This support includes mental health resources, suicide prevention training, and encourages openness about well-being, making it acceptable to say, “I’m not okay.”
  1. Our chaplains offer 24/7 inspiration and support.
Across many of our hospitals, onsite chaplains support caregivers of all backgrounds, providing consistent guidance, hope, and a listening ear during challenges.
  1. We know each of us leads, in a leadership role or not.
We help caregivers develop useful leadership skills, whether they aim to lead teams or build valuable skills like communication, emotional intelligence, or strategic thinking.
  1. We take a moment to reflect.
At Providence, we start meetings with a reflection to pause, reconnect with our purpose, and reaffirm our Mission and Core Values.
  1. We’re passionate about career growth.
We support your career growth from the start by discussing your goals and providing opportunities like tuition reimbursement, residencies, fellowships and ongoing learning and development resources.

Caregivers who’ve found purpose at Providence

Providence’s Values in Action Award is our highest annual honor, recognizing caregivers who live our core values of Compassion, Dignity, Justice, Excellence and Integrity.

Recent honorees include:

  • Coreen—She went above and beyond to ensure a patient experiencing homelessness could receive the critical surgery he needed. By arranging care for his beloved dog, she eliminated a significant barrier to his treatment.
  • Linda—Her keen observation and quick thinking identified carbon monoxide poisoning in young patients. Linda’s decisive action led to the shutdown of a local school, preventing a potential disaster and protecting the community.
  • Ashley—She made it possible for her hospice patient to relocate from Lubbock, Texas, to Los Angeles. Thanks to Ashley’s help, he was able to spend his last weeks of life reunited with his family.
  • Jesse—Demonstrating profound generosity, Jesse gave her own shoes to a patient experiencing homelessness. She didn’t stop there; Jesse also established a free shoe closet, now available to the entire hospital.
  • Christina—Through her work at a tribal health clinic, Christina supports Native community members by offering outreach and guidance to enhance the birthing experience for these families.
  • Thousands of caregivers are nominated each year. Watch this video to hear some of their stories.
