Medford: where outdoor adventure and a caring community come together
Nestled in the heart of the Rogue Vally in Southwest Oregon, just 30 miles north of the California border, Medford is a hidden gem. The area enjoys a Mediterranean climate with over 200 days of sunshine a year, making it an ideal location for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re into fishing, hiking, rafting or simply sipping wine while taking in a beautiful view, Medford has something for everyone. Providence Medford Medical Center has been a part of the community since 1911, and as you’ll hear from our caregivers, living in Medford and working for Providence is truly special.
The greatest of the great outdoors
Our Medford caregivers say the area is idyllic for people who are invigorated by Mother Nature. As RN Beaux puts it, Medford is “an outdoor person’s dreamland.” Whether you’re into paddleboarding on one of the nearby lakes, skiing in the Siskiyou Mountains or exploring the many hiking and biking trails in and around town, Medford is a natural playground.
Pharmacy Technician Kim explains the area is home to natural wonders like the Oregon Caves, the Russian Wilderness, redwoods and hot springs. “It’s just beautiful country,” she says, recalling her recent backpacking trip that included an encounter with a bear and a swim in a lake surrounded by snow in July. “Where else in the world will you see that?” she laughs.
Medford offers a great mix of leisurely activities as well, from vineyard visits to arts and culture performances. You’ll find over 85 wineries in the valley, with half of them within a 30-minute drive from Medford. You can enjoy the performing arts at the historic Craterian Theater or take in live music at the natural Britt amphitheater. Plus, just 20 minutes down the road in Ashland, you can attend plays at the renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
A tight-knit community
Medford may not offer the hustle and bustle of a big city, but that’s precisely what many of our caregivers love about it. “Some people might not like that it’s not necessarily the big city vibe,” Beaux admits, “but a lot of people love that. You can reach most places in southern Oregon in 10 to 15 minutes.”
RN Lisa, who moved to Medford from busy Huntington Beach nearly two decades ago, appreciates living in a tight-knit neighborhood where everyone looks out for one another. “The community here is amazing. I can text all my neighbors, ‘Do you have butter? Can I borrow your kayak?’ It’s really family and community-centered,” she says.
The Providence difference
Medford caregivers feel a sense of community and support at work as well, which sets Providence apart. “The people of Providence make this such a great place to work,” Lisa explains. She emphasizes the deep connections she has formed with her colleagues, who feel more like family. “They are the most caring people I know. They would drop anything to help you.”
Surgical Technician Kinsey feels the same. “The best part of coming to work for me is my co-workers. The comradery is second to none.” She says it’s due in part to the size of the hospital. “Medford is a smaller ministry, and I think the management and staff have a much closer relationship. You’re not jumping through all these hoops to get to your manager. It’s one on one, and I love that.”
“Honestly, after working in healthcare for 10 years and seeing how hospitals work, Providence is one of the most unique healthcare systems that I have ever seen,” says Beaux. “They really do, from the top down, push the strategy to love others and care for them in their time of need, because you might be in their spot one day.”
