Caregiver Stories
The places you’ll go: Three stories of advancement at Providence
Finding a workplace that supports your professional growth can change the trajectory of your career. At Providence, we’re committed to helping our caregivers build meaningful careers, develop lifelong skills and find a work community built on connection and support. We believe in nurturing the talents of each individual, and providing the tools, mentorship and educational opportunities needed to help our team members reach their highest potential. To show you what this looks like in practice, here are three inspiring stories of advancement from our own caregivers.
Selene: from receptionist to senior bronchoscopy coordinator

Selene has spent more than a dozen years building an extraordinary career at Providence Little Company of Mary in Torrance, California. Starting her journey as a receptionist, she steadily grew with the support of managers and peers into her perfect role as a respiratory therapist, serving as a senior bronchoscopy coordinator. Selene says, “From the very beginning, it was a very tight-knit group. Everybody is welcoming and taking care of each other.”
Selene attributes much of her success to the strong mentorship and support she receives. Her department has team leadership with an open-door policy, and they meet every day to ensure everyone stays aligned.
“Providence is driven by innovation and growth opportunities,” she says. An example of this is when Selene played a pivotal role in helping her hospital develop a plan to bring robotics to the department. She also assisted in developing the bronchoscopy program and vital lung cancer screening initiatives. Through this work, she says she feels a sense of purpose as she delivers the services her community needs most.

Elizabeth: from food service to Patient Experience Specialist and committee co-chair
Elizabeth’s journey is a testament to how educational support can propel a career forward. Six years ago, she moved from being an assistant manager at Panda Express to a per diem position at Providence. After the pandemic, she became full-time, knowing she wanted to grow professionally. “I knew that if I wanted to grow, I had to go back to school,” Elizabeth shares. “So, I obtained my master’s degree in healthcare administration through Providence University.”
This educational milestone opened new doors for her. Today, she thrives as a Patient Experience Specialist and serves as the Co-chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee in her area, where she provides a platform for caregivers to voice their concerns and ideas.
Kendra: from new graduate RN to emergency room leader

Kendra started her career at Providence nearly twenty-three years ago as a brand-new nurse. After achieving several milestones, including earning her mobile intensive care nurse license, which allows her to medically direct paramedics in the field, she advanced to the position of charge nurse in the emergency department.
Every day, Kendra works to ensure a smooth ED experience for patients, their families and the nurses on the floor. Despite her long tenure, she never feels stagnant, noting she continues to learn new things and embrace changes in the medical field.
Reflecting on her journey, Kendra says, “Providence is a place where I’ve grown up. I’ve become a different person. I’ve felt supported and loved, and I’ve found a family in a work unit, and you can’t do that everywhere.”
