4 imaging technologists share what makes their careers rewarding
What makes a career feel truly rewarding? For four Providence imaging technologists, it’s a combination of meaningful patient connections, dynamic work, supportive teammates, opportunities to grow and time for life outside work.
Here’s what rewarding work looks like for Ultrasound Tech Kaelee, Mammography Tech Erin, MRI Tech Rachel, and CT Tech Joshua.
Being a safe place when it matters most
Imaging technologists often meet patients during uncertain moments in their care.
Ultrasound Tech Kaelee sees those moments as a privilege and a reminder of why she chose the field.
“Studies have shown that the waiting period of getting a diagnosis is the hardest time for patients,” Kaelee says. “And that’s when we see the patients. What’s so rewarding is to just be there for those 30 minutes, to calm them, let them know that they’re not alone, that everything’s going to be okay. The fact that we can be that safe place for them is really rewarding.”
Mammography Tech Erin calls imaging “the eyes of medicine.”
Being an essential part of a patient’s diagnosis and treatment journey is one reason she calls hers “a really amazing job.” Her patients don’t always look forward to their mammograms, so Erin focuses on what she can control: “anything I can do to make it a more pleasurable experience, or less scary.” Because mammography patients often return year after year, she also has an opportunity to build lasting connections. “It’s really rewarding to be able to take mammograms and make a real difference in people’s lives,” she says.
For Senior MRI Tech Rachel, more time with patients creates another opportunity to support them.
“I like that I get more time with my patients,” she says. “It’s not just rolling one after the other. I get to spend an hour or two or three sometimes with people, and I can help them through that part of their journey. No one comes to see us because they’re feeling great. So, if I can make a difference and spend a little extra time and help people with that, I do it.”
Dynamic work that keeps you thinking
For technologists who enjoy variety and problem-solving, medical imaging offers plenty of both.
Lead CT Tech Joshua thrives on the pace.
“I enjoy CT because it’s fast-paced. We get a lot of critical patients from the ER or ICU. We see a lot of different dynamics of patients in here,” he says. “We do everything from biopsies to abscess drains to chest tubes, a lot of cool stuff.” Working nights adds another layer: “You have to be the jack of all trades as a night tech…you have to be resourceful and think on your feet a lot.”
Kaelee was drawn to ultrasound in part because it can be used in so many settings.
“I really like ultrasound because it’s safe and portable for all patients.” That versatility gives her exposure to a diverse mix of cases. She was also drawn to Providence for its Mission and the opportunity to broaden her experience. She chose her hospital in part because of its pediatric cases, an area she was interested in exploring.
Teammates who make every shift better
Every technologist we talked to brought up their team.
Joshua says his teammates instinctively know when it’s time to switch gears.
“We have fun. It’s as simple as that. During downtime, it’s pretty chill, but when it gets serious, then we all get serious.”
Kaelee describes the same combination of camaraderie and support when things get busy.
“Even though sometimes the days get crazy, we all just try to laugh and have fun. We try to just uplift each other,” she says. “If you are uncomfortable in an exam or in an area, we’re all available to help, and we’ll take the time to just help each other no matter what.”
Erin sums up that sense of belonging simply: “My team is very supportive. We really get along. Everyone is willing to help one another, and we actually enjoy each other’s company.”
Opportunities to keep growing
An imaging career can evolve along with your interests. For these Providence caregivers, growth can mean developing expertise in another modality, continuing their education or learning new types of exams.
Joshua says cross-training is one of the biggest draws.
“Most everyone’s career starts in X-ray, and then we have opportunities to cross-train into CAT scan, into MRI, into interventional radiology,” he says. “We all have growth opportunities.”
Erin is continuing to grow through education.
After finishing her associate’s degree, she says, “Providence is supporting me to get my bachelor’s degree. I’m able to further my education, which has been great.”
For Kaelee, growth comes from continually expanding her skills as ultrasound evolves.
“I’ve learned more ultrasound exams outside of school than I thought I would going to school for this … I’m excited to see 5, 10 years down the line how ultrasound will expand to even more exams and help more people.”
Balance that helps you recharge
Rewarding work can also leave room for the people and activities that matter outside the hospital.
Erin values the schedule that comes with her specialty.
“I love that mammography is an outpatient setting, so you’re able to have a flexible schedule.” For Erin, that sense of connection extends beyond the workday, too. “I like to run. Some of my coworkers here run too, so it’s really nice to make lifelong friendships at work and run with them on the weekends.”
A place to grow and stay
Ultimately, rewarding work can also mean finding somewhere you want to build a long-term career.
Joshua has spent his entire career with Providence.
“It’s just kind of been my home since I started my career in 2007,” he says. “They’ve treated me well.” His experience reflects many of the themes these technologists share: meaningful moments with patients, work that keeps them learning, teammates they can count on and opportunities to build a career over time.
Find your rewarding role
What feels rewarding can look different for every technologist. It might be thinking on your feet in CT, spending extra time with a patient in MRI, building long-term connections in mammography or helping someone feel a little safer during an ultrasound exam.
