Frame your future with a rewarding medical imaging career at Providence
Whether you’re just starting out or an experienced X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, CT or interventional radiology tech, Providence has a wide range of imaging careers waiting for you. Competitive salary is always a starting point, but ours is also a workplace with a culture of collaboration, flexibility, support and positivity—all the elements of a satisfying and rewarding career.
The best way to imagine a career with us is by hearing firsthand from those who are already part of our community. We sat down with Lynette, X-ray Lead at Providence Portland Medical Center, to get her perspective on what makes working here so special. From career growth to a sense of belonging, Lynette shares the reasons she loves working at Providence—and why you might, too.
A culture of flexibility in today’s hectic world
Life is a juggling act and when you’re balancing the demands of professional and personal commitments, flexibility isn’t just nice to have—it’s a necessity. For Lynette, it’s one of Providence’s standout qualities.
Lynette says, “The managers are flexible with scheduling if I need to take a day off or move things around. That hasn’t always been my experience elsewhere, and it makes a huge difference.”
Teams that support each other
Lynette recalls feeling alone in a past X-ray role at another system. “I’d go to do an X-ray, enter the room alone, perform the exam alone and come out and do my paperwork by myself.” The environment at Providence is starkly different, she says.
“I have people asking, ‘Can I make a stretcher for you?’ Or ‘Do you need help sliding that patient over?’ If a unique exam comes up, and I don’t remember the specifics, we are like a hive brain, figuring out together how to do the best for the patient. That’s been a unique experience here at Providence.”
A “choose your own adventure” approach to growth
Here, Radiology caregivers can choose the career path that’s right for them, with guidance and support along the way. The department fosters many cross-training opportunities for medical imaging professionals. Caregivers who want to start in X-ray and shift to other modalities, such as CT or MRI, often do so without needing to return to school.
Caregivers who do want to obtain additional certificates or degrees can take advantage of the Providence Education Benefit Program with Guild, which was made for busy working caregivers, and offers certificate and degree programs such as Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Services with up to $10,000 of tuition covered upfront for eligible caregivers. In addition, Providence annually funds up to $5,250 in tuition for eligible caregivers and programs.
Lynette shares how her career trajectory grew while working at Providence. Starting in X-ray, she worked her way into a leadership position as a tech-in-charge and now into a managerial support role where she assists with scheduling and other administrative tasks. Lynette attributes this growth to Providence’s emphasis on career path clarity and supporting employees’ goals.
“We meet with our managers annually to discuss our goals. I was upfront about wanting to move up, and I’ve always received the support and resources needed to make it happen,” Lynette explains. “The supportive management team here is amazing, and that’s what keeps so many of us at Providence.”
The Providence advantage: its people
Lynette moved from out of state for her role at Providence, not knowing many people in the area. As she settled in and came to know Providence as an employer, she realized that what matters most to her is the Providence advantage: its people.
She says that the mutual respect between managers and caregivers (employees) is priceless. “When I come into work, I’m genuinely excited to be here.”
Lynette describes her fellow caregivers more like friends than colleagues. “Everybody has quirky, funny personalities. We have so much fun. People sing, dance and share jokes—I’m working with my closest friends.”
This strong sense of camaraderie makes the workday enjoyable, and Lynette appreciates that her team includes people of a range of ages, experience levels, and backgrounds, each bringing a unique perspective to the group.
